Types of Sentences

Please review the article on sentence types.  You will need this information for a quiz.  

Remember these things:

1. Strive to write compound and complex sentences in your writing.  Simple sentences are for younger students learning to write.

2. Compound sentences allow you to combine two short sentences using conjunctions. Each part of a compound sentence can stand alone and still be a complete sentence.

3. Complex sentences will have an independent clause and a dependent clause. Only one part of a complex sentences can stand alone as independent, the other part can not and is thus dependent.  

4. Declarative sentences are statements that declare an idea or a statement and end with a period.

5. An interrogative sentence interrogates using a question mark.

6. An imperative sentence is a command which is imperative for you to follow.

7. An exclamatory sentence is full of strong feelings and emotions so it has to end with an exclamation point!
